The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning review

I had no idea if I would ever watch this or be interested in it. But ever since including parts of The Little Mermaid in this blog, I thought that it would make sense for me to include a review of this as it is the last part currently of the movie franchise or possibly all of the franchise (outside of the TV show that I can’t remember as well and don’t plan to review as a result, although we’ll see if I change my mind about that in the future or not) that is worth covering in this blog. I’ve never seen the movie before so I might as well watch it and enjoy it. Let’s get to the review.

We begin with Sebastian narrating about where the merpeople live. We are focusing on the magical world below. The person who loved music the most was the wife of King Triton. They are gathered at the surface when pirates or something like them attack. It appears that Queen Athena was lost. King Triton then banned music as he didn’t want to be reminded of his wife anymore.

After ten years have passed, Ariel and her sister are annoyed by the governess, Morena, showing up early. It is always the same thing with him. Some creature named Benjamin is assisting her. Sebastian shows up to where the king is and they talk some about business. While Ariel wants to go somewhere special, this does not happen in the end. Later, she tickles her sister with seaweed. She is annoyed with the fact that she doesn’t get to do much of anything and is assigned a barnacle task of some sort.

Morena is annoyed and wants to get Sebastian’s job. All she needs is him to make one mistake. It seems that Benjamin is disinterested in some ways, not sure that she can do anything. While Ariel is doing her boring job, Flounder shows up and plays music. This leads sea creatures that I think are sharks to chase after them as music is forbidden. Sebastian lets off Flounder with a warning while taking Ariel back to the palace in question.

The sisters fight some with each other, but King Triton shows up. Ariel is depressed still and it seems that everyone else notices this. When Flounder shows up again, Ariel goes after him. She notices him going through a secret place which she goes through on her own. She follows him through a cave and falls to where people are singing and dancing. It turns out that Sebastian is part of this secret club or whatever it is called or like.

Everyone quickly leaves when they notice her here. She plays various musical instruments. She knows of a song that she is randomly singing. People show back up as she sings this song about remembering a lot of different things. She remembers her mother. She quickly takes an oath to protect the others who also like music. Sebastian is still worried in some ways.

Later, Sebastian is nervous while talking to King Triton. Morena doesn’t seem to get much headway about this. Later, Ariel talks to her sister about the music in the club when they find her with I believe is a moccasin or something like it. Now all of her sisters want to hear this as well. Morena gets suspicious when she sees this.

The sisters all show up at the club with one of them only interested in potential boys. One resists the requests to dance until she admits that she can’t. She is still urged by others to dance. All of the sisters think that their mother would have loved this. But Morena notices that all of them are missing. She tells King Triton what is going on which leads others to show up to this. But everyone was cutting loose, footloose, kicking off their Sunday shoes. King Triton wants them all arrested with his daughters being taken back to their home. Ariel talks about wanting music like her mother would. The king wants all of his daughters confined to the palace.

No one seems to be happy except for Morena. She still wants more. Ariel doesn’t like to remember as much since the fun times seem to be gone. King Triton might be willing to reconsider or something. But it is hard to tell.

The prisoners in the meantime are trying to figure out how to escape. They want to use Sebastian to escape. She realizes the others from prison as she seeks to leave. This place doesn’t seem home without music. This leads Sebastian to have a revelation. She knows where to go.

Meanwhile, Benjamin shows up and realizes that Ariel is missing. Flounder gets the others to sing since they really want to get it done at some point in time. While they don’t want their cover blown at first, they decide to join in on their way out of Atlantica.

King Triton thinks that he might have been too tough and is told that both Ariel and Sebastian are missing. Morena gets upset about this and how the king seems preoccupied. The fugitives are lead by Sebastian to a new home, but it seems to disappoint nearly everyone. The king sends out his creatures after Ariel. Morena tricks Benjamin into giving her a key to release others from this area that are sort of minions like Flotsom and Jetsom.

In this new area, Ariel finds a music box and Sebastian explains some of what happened with the death of Ariel’s mother. Sebastian wants to return the music box to the others, much to the outrage out others in the band who don’t think that this is a good idea. Flounder is the only one in the band that joins both Sebastian and Flounder in their quest.

The three of them bump into the creatures that Morena has as she and they seeks to capture them. She fights with Sebastian who uses starfish as if they were throwing stars. The band shows up to help save the others. Ariel drops the music box and goes after it. Sebastian takes out Morena. Flounder is able to get the creatures to tie themselves in horrible knots like heffalumps and woozles. Morena tries to get out of her log jam or whatever she is captured in and Ariel seems to get hurt, but she is revealed to be okay. King Triton brings back music to the kingdom. More color is brought back into this place as we see the music box being brought back to where it was.

Morena and Benjamin talk some in prison during a tag to the movie as they dance the samba. This seems to be how the movie ends. I’ll stick around to see if there is anything else to the credits or if this is about it for it in the end. There is not so I’ll get to the rest of this post.

It was nice seeing more of Ariel’s sisters in this movie, even though we don’t see them as much as we otherwise could. This is the most that we have ever gotten out of them in the franchise. I felt that it seemed like Benjamin wasn’t invested much into the story as it seemed like he didn’t care. There is not too much else to say about this. I have no idea how similar this is to Footloose as I haven’t seen that movie yet and am unsure if I ever will. We don’t know just how much King Triton being too mean is part of this story, but it seems like too much of a recap from the first one at times. Other than all that, this seems like a pretty good story and worth watching. For now, this is Adam Decker, signing off.
