Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs

As usual when it comes PBS specials, ones can creep up on us quite suddenly and catch you off guard. Well, recently Alan Cumming did a special for PBS and I decided to do a special new blog post for it. I thought that a full-fledged review would be better than just mentioning it once in a cast update as I’d have no idea when/if it would air in the future. You might see it again on your local PBS channel, see various songs from this on youtube, or find it on DVD. Anyways, here’s the review:

I’m not sure what the first song is. He launches right into it at the beginning of the performance. It will always be weird to me hearing him speak or sing in his natural voice. It seems like a strange song, but he does it weird. That makes it weirder.

The second song is one that I might have heard before, but like many songs, I have no idea what the name of it is, even though it is familiar. The song mentions something to rely on or something like that. He seems to do a powerful version of it. It is during this song where he first addresses the audience and mentions that this is being filmed in Las Vegas.

Before the third song, he talks to the audience some. The next song might also be familiar, but I can’t identify it either. It seems more inspirational than the others so far. You can’t tell from The Good Wife how good a singer he is since that wouldn’t show up in that show.

Between the third and fourth one, he mentions that he was on The Good Wife. He also mentions what all he did while doing that show. He then mentions the show Who Do You Think You Are? This leads to him remembering his grandfather which leads into his version of the Billy Joel song: Goodbye Saigon. It is a different and more energetic version than Billy Joel’s is.

The fifth song has a weird introduction to it that explains more of the song. I’ve never heard of the song before. The real version sounds much nicer than the introduction to it, even if the audience did find the first version funny due to his explanations to it.

Before the sixth song, he mentions hosting the Tony Awards with the actress whose first name is Kristen and last name I can’t spell. I remember her as she’s a weird looking person with a weird sounding name. I think that this song is probably from a musical of some sort, but I’m not familiar with it, as usual. It mentions the word “you” a lot.

The seventh song is called Dinner at Eight. Apparently he was abused by his father, although he can joke about it now. Weird. It is very loud with his performance and it seems like kind of a hate song in a way. But, there might be some goodness to the song.

He then goes straight into the eighth song. I can’t exactly tell what it is. Well, it is actually a medley of different songs. Part of it is Avril Lavange’s Complicated. That’s how it starts out, at least. It then goes into an Adele song that I’m familiar with, but I don’t know the name of. It was on a Saturday Night Live sketch where everyone was crying to the song. He mentions later that it is called Someone like You. It then becomes a mash-up with The Edge of Glory. Then it becomes part of Katy Perry’s Firework for a moment. He does them after a DJ did them all together with him thinking that they are all the same song.

He then mentions Liza Minnelli as he goes into the next song. He tells an interesting story that she said, but then mentions that none of it ever happened. He then sings And So It Goes by Billy Joel. He has a soothing version of it, although I’m not sure how I like other instruments besides the piano being in it. It can be hard liking some covers sometimes, unless it is Celtic Woman doing the cover. I do still like his version for the most part.

He then gets to what really is the last song of the night. He thanks all of the musicians who helped him perform tonight. I’m not sure what this last song is. It does seem like a pretty simple song. It does make for a good finale. Well, the song does get strange towards the end. Maybe this is two different songs at the end. I can’t tell if he’s just making this part up as he goes along or not. But he does mention lots of people in his “I’ll Drink to That” song at the end.

That’s pretty much all there is to the performance. My review here, or whatever you call it, doesn’t do it justice. I hope that you’ll have time to see it and that you’ll like it too. I honestly wouldn’t have missed much by not seeing it, though. All I hope is that I can find out if he does something like this again in the future before a last minute review when it aired at 1 in the morning. (It did air earlier, but I decided to go with a different performance later so that I might not risk missing the whole show entirely.) For now, this is Adam Decker, signing off.

Cast Update 11-7-2016

Here is the next update regarding the cast of The Good Wife. I have both good and bad news regarding BrainDead. The good news is that I know what happened to it regarding the next summer schedule. The bad news is that I know this because the show was cancelled. As for the shows that have replaced The Good Wife, they are finally both on the schedule. One of them was a show that had already aired (Life in Pieces) so the only new show that replaced it is The Great Indoors. That’s a pretty strange replacement for this show.

Spin-off information- It appears that in addition to Christine Baranski, Cush Jumbo, and Sarah Steele, we have more info regarding who is in the cast. Rose Leslie is joining the cast as Diane’s goddaughter who recently completed law school. I don’t know who this actress is, but we’ll see what importance she ends up being to the cast. Delroy Lindo has also joined the cast. It appears that he is competition for Diane. I also wonder if the premiere on the network will make them change their mind about not airing more of it on the network, but I guess that we will have to see the show to know for sure.

Untitled Good Wife spin-off: It appears that nothing much is known about the show right now as it doesn’t even have a name. It will be put on www.cbs.com and be available to watch on CBS all access to those that want it. It will be released sometime in February 2017. More information will be revealed about it in the future.

Julianna Margulies: It appears that the main actress has a movie project in the works. It is called The Three Christs of Ypsilanti. I’m not sure how it sounds just yet, but I’m not sure that it’s something that I would like. There is nothing else new to report.

The Three Christs of Ypsilanti: This is a movie in preproduction that will be released sometime in 2018. Apparently, a doctor, who I think is played by Julianna, has to deal with three patients who all think that they are Christ due to a mental problem that they all have. That was the original plotline, but now a new one mentions a man leaving his job to go ballet dancing? What? One can only believe that the newer plotline is wrong based on more information that I have. I also found out that this is based off of a real life case of people with schizophrenia. Maybe I will like it then, but I’d have to find out more information to know for sure.

Josh Charles: This actor left The Good Wife during a season instead of at the end of it. Typically, one doesn’t leave a show and then do nothing so I hope that he’s been busy. Well, he has at least three projects in the works, according to imdb. The first is called The Drowning. I can’t gather much from that just yet. But it does appear that Amateur, a sports movie, is something that I can find more information about. Another project mentioned has a long title and is called Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer. Hopefully all of these get made and released.

The Drowning: This looks like a movie of some sort. It does not have a release date or trailer just yet. At least it is planned to be released later in 2016. I don’t have a quick synopsis of the movie yet, but it is a thriller and drama of some sort so it might be good, if it does get made. This is labeled as postproduction at the time. More information about the movie proves that is it based off of a book called Border Crossing, which is also the name of what the movie was called at one point before they switched it to this. The plot: a man saves another man from drowning, but realizes that they have a history from ten years ago. It might have been released someone so I will have to check out where I might be able to find it. It isn’t in any local areas if it is out yet.

Amateur: Like the previous movie, this does not have a trailer or release date yet. This one is still listed as filming, so hopefully it can be released and finished sometime later in 2016 when it is set to be released. This is a basketball drama and it appears to be a coming of age drama as well. Can a young player fit in with a new team?

Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer: While this is mentioned as a movie for this year, it seems to have a release date of March 2017. It has a rating on imdb as it must have played at some film festival before an official release to the public. To be clear, though, I have no idea what’s going on with the movie at the moment as there is still not a trailer for it or an official release date. I don’t need to mention the plot of it as it seems to be explained well in the title. I still don’t know when it will be available publically. It seems odd that there isn’t more information about it.

Graham Phillips: I honestly wasn’t sure if he’d still be in acting after The Good Wife. I didn’t know if he was wanting to focus more on furthering his education by going to college or if he was just going to go to some other job outside of acting. For now, this actor has a movie in him that you might have seen me talk about in my CSI: Cyber blog. That movie is called XOXO and is available to watch on Netflix right now. I just don’t know if I can get a review of this just yet. It also mentioned him being in Secrets and Lies, the TV show, but I don’t know if this is a big role yet or not. That show is on at 9/8 Central on Sundays on ABC, in case you were interested in it. I will not review it yet, but I will have to see it in case he does have a big role in it.

XOXO: This movie is about six people sharing some strange romantic night of some sort. It looks like a romantic drama of some sort. It should be out now as of this update. I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to see it since it appears to be a Netflix exclusive. I don’t know if it will ever be available on DVD for me to watch without Netflix. I’ll check back later for more updates. I also hope to find a guest reviewer for this movie or hope that it would be available to rent sometime at my video store. I’m not getting Netflix just to watch this. There is a trailer for the movie now.

Thoughts on trailer: It looks like an interesting trailer. I’d have to say that it was a vague trailer of some sort. I can’t tell yet if it is one of those famous controversial trailers that make a movie look better than it is. I’m not entirely sure if I have seen one of those. Anyways, it looks like the movie is a fairly normal movie of some sort although it might have some weird parts to it. The trailer does make me interested in seeing the movie. I hope that it’s not a misleading trailer.

Now is the point where I should post a review of the movie, but I can’t as I am not able to watch this. If anyone reading this is able to see the movie and wants to do a review of it, then let me know. In fact, if you want to do that, then just comment on this post. In the meantime, I’ll see if it ever gets released to DVD so I can actually watch it out of Netflix.

Archie Panjabi: This actress did a lot after leaving the show. Right now, she is in the show Blindspot which I’ve recently started watching the second season of online. Now that I can confirm that she has an important, starring role on the show, this show will finally get its own section in this blog. Sorry for the delay and possible wrong time of when the show airs. That is the only project I can see of hers at the moment.

Blindspot: This shows airs at 8/7 Central on Wednesdays on NBC. Archie plays a character who seems to suddenly be helping with the team. In case you were wanting to know more about the show, here is a long delayed review to post here.

Review: Blindspot: Status- Currently on NBC at 8/7 Central on Wednesdays. Why I’ve seen it- I was interested in the idea of it. Description- For mysterious reasons, a woman has amnesia and tattoos all over her body and there are crimes solved based off of this. Notable People- Archie Panjabi, who was on The Good Wife, is a character on the show. Pros- The show is intriguing and interesting. Cons- The show may seem a bit scatterbrained and it seems like they are trying to do a female version of Jason Bourne. The show can seem similar to other types of dramas in a way. It can also be more violent than it needs to be. Note to Parents- I’d say that this is something that teenagers can watch, but not any younger than that. I think that all the episodes I’ve seen thus far were TV14. Recommendation- I’d say that this is worth watching. Prediction- I’m not sure that I have a high hope for the show at the moment. I could be proven wrong, but nothing NBC airs at this timeslot seems to last. Reception: positive. Grade: B+.

Christine Baranski: After rejecting various pilots and other projects in the hopes of getting a spin-off from the Good Wife, she got what was wanted and will be on a Good Wife spin-off. It will only be available on CBS All Access (and hopefully DVDs in the future) so it will not be something I’m able to watch at first. I just wish I knew what the name of the spin-off is. It seems that she’s doing something else as well. In addition to the Untitled Good Wife spin-off, she also did a movie called Trolls which is pretty far along into the development process that it looks we will be seeing it.

Untitled Good Wife spin-off: It appears that nothing much is known about the show right now as it doesn’t even have a name. It will be put on www.cbs.com and be available to watch on CBS all access to those that want it. It will be released sometime in February 2017. More information will be revealed about it in the future.

Trolls: This is an animated movie which is hard to tell the plot of for sure right now. It appears to be about the happy trolls and their enemies the pessimist Bergens who like to eat trolls. Upon future inspection, it appears that most of the trolls go missing and there’s a quest to get them back. This movie is out now as of this update. We’ll see if it becomes a hit or not.

Thoughts on trailer: Some animated films look weirder than others. This is certainly could be good, although there are worries of mine that it could be a misleading film. Now you typically don’t see kid’s movies addressing the missing person’s storyline. I don’t know why I find missing persons stories to be so interesting, but I do hope that it’s as good as it looks.

Review: Movie Name- Trolls. Rating- PG. Noteworthiness- This is based off of the Happy Trolls something of some sort or another. Description- 20 years after escaping from Bergens, the trolls’ lives are in danger again when one comes back to have the others eat them. This is an animated, musical movie. The Good Wife Alumni in it- Christine Baranski voices the main villain of the film. Pros- The film is quite colorful and feel good. There is much to enjoy about it as there is a straightforward plot and not much about it is bad. Cons- The ending, while good, seems kind of like a cop out. Not all of it makes sense and there isn’t much of a sense of danger throughout most of it. Note to Parents- There are some fart/poop jokes and an animated butt, briefly shown. There are also scenes briefly involving choking and there is some peril as a lot of threats regarding trying to be eaten and actually being captured. I’d say that this is probably mostly acceptable to kids. Recommendation- I would suggest that people watch it as it was pretty good to me. IMDB Ranking: 6.7; My Grade: B.

Matt Czuchry: Besides The Good Wife, this actor was known for another TV show: Gilmore Girls. They are coming back with a sequel miniseries of that called Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. That seems to be the only future project of his at the moment.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life: This will be on Netflix and I probably wouldn’t have watched this if it aired on a format I could see simply because I was never into this show when it first aired. I might like it or might not. I honestly don’t know for sure. With luck, I can get someone else to review this when it debuts on Netflix on November 25th, 2016. That seems like an odd time to debut it. Won’t we all be busy with Thanksgiving and stuff that time? Oh, well. It’s not like we will have to see it then.

Thoughts on trailer: I hope that a better trailer is released in the future as this offers pretty much little to no information about the show. Maybe a future trailer could make it look better. It doesn’t look all that interesting based off of this one.

I have a friend who has the first season of Gilmore Girls on DVD. While I expect the reboot to be different in some ways, you can expect a review of the show in the future. First, I need an empty space on my list of shows to watch. Since I’m borrowing it, this will actually replace what could have been the next in line. I have far too much to watch of shows on DVD and not enough time to watch them.

Review of original Gilmore Girls: Status- No longer on the air, it used to air on the WB and then later the CW. Why I’ve seen it- I borrowed the DVDs from a friend just for this blog. Noteworthiness- This got rebooted by Netflix. Description- Notable People- Matt Czuchry was on this show at one point. Melissa McCarthy, who later did movies and the TV show Mike and Molly, was also a character. Lauren Graham, who later was on Parenthood, was one of the main characters. Pros- The show is nice and simple. Cons- It seems dragged out, in a way. Note to Parents- I say that it might be good for most ages, although it has enough in there that wouldn’t be good for people younger than preteens. Recommendation- I guess that the original show is good enough, but it is hard to give it that good a rating for sure. Reception: critically acclaimed. Grade: B-.

Makenzie Vega: She has been working since The Good Wife ended. There was a TV movie that she did for the Chiller TV channel. I’m going to consider that a past project that I already missed. It looks like she will be doing another TV movie that is also a thriller called Heart of Murder, which has been renamed, as you can see in the next paragraph. I’m not sure what else she is doing now besides that. There’s also another TV movie that she did in postproduction called Tomboy.

Heart of Murder: This film appears to be about someone who got a heart transplant by a cousin of theirs who may have been killed. It is listed in postproduction and coming out this year, although it doesn’t seem to have a release date or a trailer yet. Hopefully this will be out sometime in 2016. I cannot find information about this easily so, hopefully, I can find out more about this in future updates cause it certainly won’t be this one. The name of the project has changed and will now be called Pretty Little Dead Girl, which I will call it until its official release or another potential name change.

Tomboy: This made for TV movie is listed as in postproduction and has neither a release date nor trailer for it just yet. It is something that will be out in 2017 according to imdb. It doesn’t mention so much as a plot to it, so I guess I’ll have to figure that out for future updates. One can guess that a tomboy is central to the plot.

Alan Cumming: Here’s an actor who’s known for starring in Broadway plays and productions. Perhaps you have seen him on the Tony Awards that you always watch because you can’t afford to see Broadway any other way. It looks like he has a lot of future projects in the works. There’s at least three for me to track right now. The first one is called The Surrealist. Another movie that he’s doing in the future is Battle of the Sexes. The last of the movies that I see him in is After Louie. That’s a lot of projects to look out for in the future.

The Surrealist: This appears to be a scripted movie regarding an artist named Salvador Dali. This appears to be based off of a true story. It looks like he has issues with his wife over his obsession with the Mona Lisa. There is no release date or trailer for the movie, and it appears that it doesn’t so much as have a single year of release on it just yet. Upon doing more research, it might be in development hell since a source I found with information says that it was planned since at least the fifth upcoming season of The Good Wife. So hopefully something will eventually come of this potential project.

Battle of the Sexes: This is listed as being in postproduction right now. This is also based off of a true story regarding a tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobbie Riggs. It has no trailer or release date as of yet, but it should be coming out in 2017. We’ll see what happens with that.

After Louie: This movie is in postproduction. It is a drama of some sort. It appears to relate to being gay and how it has changed as of today. There is no release date or trailer for it yet, but it should be out in 2016 or 2017 sometime. I’m kind of confused about it now as it mentions two different projects that Alan is in, both called After Louie. One is mentioned as completed (the one with the earlier release year) and the other is still mentioned as in postproduction. So I’m really confused here and will have to do more research for future updates.

Zach Grenier: It appears that he is acting in a movie of some sort. The movie he will be in was once called Untitled Colin Warner Project, but it has been renamed, as you’ll see in the next paragraph. This is still the only future project of his that I see him in.

Untitled Colin Warner Project: This is another wrongfully convicted of murder movie that you see from time to time. I can’t tell whether or not it is a true story it is based off of just yet. It is set to be released sometime in 2017. There is no trailer or actual release date just yet for this. It is listed as in postproduction. There is an official name for the movie now; it will be called Crown Heights.

Matthew Goode: He has been doing a lot of projects since leaving The Good Wife. I might as well get to mentioning all of them. The first project is a movie called Allied, set for release in November. The other projects he’s done are The Hatton Garden Job, Magik, and Roadside Picnic. And that’s all just after the show ended and not since he left it. There is nothing else new to report.

Allied: This looks like a World War II movie, but based off of a made up story instead of a real one. I’ll do research to see what of the two it is. It does have a release date of November 23rd, 2016 and there’s a trailer released of it, so hopefully there isn’t any delays in its future.

Thoughts on trailer: I can’t gather much from the trailer just yet, but it looks like a fairly interesting movie. I would want to see it, although I personally try to avoid any movies with nudity in them. I want to keep some mystery around for when I hopefully eventually get married. I honestly can’t tell yet if there will be nudity or if they are just teasing us with it like network television does. Anyways, I am interested in seeing this movie, although I’m not sure when I’ll have time that time of year.

The Hatton Garden Job: The movie is now in postproduction and set for release sometime in December 2016 in the UK. Does that mean that someone in the US like me won’t be able to watch it? It has no trailer for it released just yet. More research into it reveals the plot: it is based off of a true story of a heist in London that happened just last year. There are two other potential projects about the same heist. If this is made first, you’ll have to wonder if the others will see the light of day. Alternatively, if any of the others get made first, would this be made?

Magik: This is an animated movie in the fantasy genre. It looks like it will be a Canadian film. There is no trailer for it yet, but there is a release date of December 25th, 2016. So it looks like it is one of the many Christmas releases that some movies probably lean for. This is in postproduction according to imdb. The plot relates to a father visiting an alternate world to find his missing kids.

Roadside Picnic: Here’s a science fiction show of some sort that was considered by the WGN network to be a show. Last I checked, it was in preproduction for release later in 2016. In the show, there are different supernatural zones affects by a former alien visit. What I can’t tell just yet is if the show is actually moving forward, or if this was rejected as a pilot. I have the feeling that it was actually rejected as a pilot, but we’ll see more for sure about that in the future. I cannot find any information about it in terms of whether or not the pilot was picked up yet so this will still have its own section until it can be decided by me whether or not it is moving forward.

Cush Jumbo: In addition to doing the Untitled Good Wife spin-off, there’s at least one other project that she is doing, a short called Toads & Bluebottles. If she’s doing anything else besides them, I sure can’t find it at the moment.

Untitled Good Wife spin-off: It appears that nothing much is known about the show right now as it doesn’t even have a name. It will be put on www.cbs.com and be available to watch on CBS all access to those that want it. It will be released sometime in February 2017. More information will be revealed about it in the future.

Toads & Bluebottles: This is going to be a ten minute short to be released sometime in 2017. There’s no trailer or release date for this just yet. I’m not sure how to see most shorts. I think that most of them are hard to come by. It is listed as in preproduction. I was able to find the plot: it’s an animated story about imaginary people doing a life journey in just ten minutes. Will it be good? I have no idea. I’d have to see it, or at least a trailer for it, to know for sure.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan: It appears that he’s in a movie called Desierto. Now I was confused about whether or not it was a new release. Turn out, it was a foreign film and some people would have already seen it. But the North American release of the film had yet to happen. Only that movie is out now. Also, it appears that he might have joined the cast of The Walking Dead. Thankfully, while I will not be able to watch it myself, I do know someone (multiple people, actually) who can review the show for me.

Desierto: This is a thriller, by the looks of it. It is about people trying to cross from Mexico to America, but they encounter a huge problem: a racist man who wants to kill them. Jeffrey is playing the main villain by the looks of it. It is out now as of this update. What are my thoughts on it? Well, I’d tell you if I could see it.

Thoughts on trailer: I’m honestly not sure if I would be interested in this or not were it not up to me to review what I can of shows and movies of The Good Wife alumni. That’s not to say that it would be bad, it just wouldn’t be my type of film. It looks interesting and dramatic. I’m not sure what expectations I’d have going into it. But I will watch it and hope that I like it.

Now is the point where I should post a review of the movie, but I can’t as I am not able to watch this. If anyone reading this is able to see the movie and wants to do a review of it, then let me know. In fact, if you want to do that, then just comment on this post. In the meantime, I’ll see if it ever gets released to DVD so I can actually watch it.

The Walking Dead: This is a popular gory cable zombie drama about humans trying to save themselves from what is known as The Walking Dead. I honestly haven’t seen it, so I don’t know if it is as good as everyone makes it seem. But I’ll leave that to guest reviewers of mine to decide for you. Hopefully I get them some point soon so they can help me. If not, I’ll just mention the show until I do get a guest review here at some point. This show airs at 9/8 Central on Sundays on AMC.

Robert King: Here is where we switch to writing credits. He and his wife were doing a show called BrainDead, only it was cancelled recently. It appears that he is also helping with the Untitled Good Wife spin-off as well.

Untitled Good Wife spin-off: It appears that nothing much is known about the show right now as it doesn’t even have a name. It will be put on www.cbs.com and be available to watch on CBS all access to those that want it. It will be released sometime in February 2017. More information will be revealed about it in the future.

BrainDead: This was a political CBS drama that aired during the summer of 2016. It was officially cancelled so I won’t be including it in future updates. It was a pretty good show so I will tell you an updated review of it factoring its cancellation into the update.

Review: BrainDead: Why I’ve seen it- I was generally interested in the show, I tend to always watch a new show on CBS, and since it features a link to The Good Wife, I had to watch it once to review for my other blog. Description- A political drama with supernatural twists, this show steals from Invasion of the Body Snatchers by having alien bugs taking over the brains of politicians. Notable People- Robert King and Michelle King, who both created The Good Wife, are the creators of this show as well. Tony Shaloub, who is most notable for Monk, is a character on the show. Pros- The show is interesting and different. Not much about it has been used elsewhere. Cons- The show is slow moving and can be strange. It doesn’t always make sense. Note to Parents- While this certainly isn’t too bad, I would have to recommend against preteens and younger watching this. Recommendation- I would say that this is pretty good to watch, even after a possible slight cliffhanger. Cancellation reasons- The show never got that good ratings and whatever chances it had of renewal before it was moved to the worst timeslot ever (10/9 Central on CBS Sundays) and it had even less afterwards. Similar shows- Madam Secretary, No Tomorrow, and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. DVD suggestion- I might get them myself, although I don’t know yet for sure if I will. Reception: generally favorable. Grade: B-.

Michelle King: Since she is married to the previous person, it would appear that she would probably have the same projects in the works as her husband. This section may be redundant since any similar projects that these people have would be the same thing and thus have the same information. She is working on the Untitled Good Wife spin-off.

Untitled Good Wife spin-off: It appears that nothing much is known about the show right now as it doesn’t even have a name. It will be put on www.cbs.com and be available to watch on CBS all access to those that want it. It will be released sometime in February 2017. More information will be revealed about it in the future.
