The
way I see it, there is a huge problem going on and there might not be a
solution to it. You see, there are people who support Trump and they refuse to
say anything bad about that terrible man. They can only be brainwashed into
thinking that he’s a good person because why else would he get anyone’s
support?
Of
course, this line of thinking isn’t much better than theirs is. While it is no
secret that I am a Trump hater, I can’t be blinded by my hatred of him as I
might feel that they are blinded by their support of him. This leads to the
main issue of the post: Can those who hate Trump and those who like him ever
see eye to eye on anything? Or are we going to wind up like the characters of
Pocahontas where they can only see the savage side of the other person?
There
are some debates in this country where people take one side and can’t really
accept what the other people chose if they went the other way. There is very
little compromise on either of their parts with few willing to make concessions
to the other point of view. Often, the issue in question is quite trivial such
as Team Edward or Team Jacob. Sometimes, it is much more predominate like
pro-life and pro-choice. Now, we have whether or not people think that Trump is
a good president. I will never be convinced that he is one, but could I ever
see eye to eye with someone who does like him?
What
one might want to happen in this whole issue might be the only thing that can
get us to agree with the other one: a change of opinion. But here’s the thing:
if we can only agree with them if one of us changes our opinion on Trump, that
would be an issue. Without either of us changing what we think about a man,
could we still see eye to eye on some things?
You
see, I realize that in a way, both of us can be at fault. I know not to mention
Trump to those who will just outright sing his praises like he’s some sort of
savior of mankind. I also know that I should not mention him to those who will
get angry at his mere name and go on rants about just how terrible a person he
is. Why are both at fault? Well, we can’t have people blinded by their emotions
to the point of outright rage or support of a person. They won’t see any
benefits in the other person’s side of things and won’t even consider what good
points they might have.
If
we think that there is nothing that the Trump supporters have in their favor and
that they are all crazy or irrational or some other combination of negative
qualities, then are we any better than they are? Hillary Clinton was rightly
criticized when she labeled half of Trump’s supporters as a basket of
deplorable. She also stated that there were good people among them too. A man
or woman who supports Trump can be a rationally minded person, even if we don’t
see it that way. While we may see them as people piling onto the Titanic
without any realization of what will happen to the ship, some of them have good
reasons for supporting him. Not all of his supporters are racist people.
If
we as Trump haters don’t think that they will change, then it might be up to
us. No, we don’t have to support Trump, but we can try to see their side of things.
We can listen to them as they talk and offer up our own points as to what could
be wrong with their line of thinking in a good and respectful matter. Remember
this quote from Michelle Obama, “If they aim low, we aim high.” We should
always try to understand someone else’s beliefs, even if we will never agree
with what they are. If we don’t think that they can change, we should if only
to make sure that we can, in fact, see eye to eye with them. And never, ever
stoop down to their level.
One
can only hope that Trump haters and Trump supporters can see eye to eye on
different issues that have nothing to do with him or his beliefs. We can be a
better country that what this decisive person often resorts us to on social
media or actual conversations. It can start with both sides because we don’t
have to be irrational. I think that it is possible for us to see eye to eye on
different issues. That’s the way we should work in this country. No matter what
differences we have with a person, we should be able to see their side of
things.
